Brightlayer Machinery 2.3

This is the first release of Brightlayer for applications in the machinery segment. This releas note gives a high level overview about the system setup and the main features. For more details please view the user documentation.

Design and Setup

• Brightlayer Machinery is a Cloud based software. The software is running on a Microsoft Azure Cloud service. To comply with local rules and regulations there are different instances of Brightlayer running in different regions:

  • US instance

  • EMEA instance

  • APAC instance

• The Software is designed to send and receive data via the Azure IoT Hub. This data would be transferred via an MQTT Gateway or any other device that would be caplable to allow being connected to the Azure IoT Hub and send data via MQTT.

• The data structure to be exchanged between the application and Brightlayer would be defined by an Ontology structure. This Ontology structure has to be activated in Brightlayer before data can be received. When sending data, the device, that is transmitting the data, needs to define in the payload which ontology profile is used for the data in the payload.

Features and capabilities

Brightlayer Machinery would deliver the following features and capabilities.

• Displaying data, send from the application, with different widgets. Those widgets allow to structure the data and show it with the support of graphics (e.g. gauges, trend-diagrams, etc.)
• Data export in different formats. All data channels could be exported in different formats and time frames for post processing of bigger data batches.
• Widget and Dashboard Library. Widgets and Dashboards can be organized in libraries. This feature is targeted to facilitate the creation of bigger infrastructures with many devices.
• Sending Cloud-to-device messages. Those messages could be executed via widgets (e.g. the Controls Widget) and could be used to execute activities in the application.
• User and Roles management. User can be given individual access and operation rights on the platform.

Eaton’s Machine Configurator is a toolset to allow users of Eaton Software to easily manage their Software versions and updates. The toolset is currently targeted to work with the following Eaton Software tools:

• Galileo

• Codesys

• easySoft

• PXPM

• InControl

Eaton may extend the list of supported Software tools from time to time.

Design and Setup

The Machine Configurator tool is a Windows Desktop application that needs to be installed in parallel to the Eaton Software tools. The application would search on the computer for all available Eaton Software and different versions of this software.

Features and capabilities

• Showing all installed Eaton Software on the device in one overview screen.

• Allowing to manage the software tools from the Configurator (install new software, update, delete)

• Information about available updates, other software offers from Eaton and news.

All Advantech devices, offered via the Eaton ordering plaforms may have been adapted to fit into the Eaton software and systems landscape. Eaton may offer additional tools and applications over time to make the adaption and integration of the Advantech devices even easier than they can be integrated today.

Converting a router into an MQTT gateway

Advantech routers of the ICR series are compatible with the Advantech router apps. Those apps allow the user to convert the router into an MQTT gateway and enable the router to work as an endpoint for VPN networks. Eaton has tested and released router apps to work with the Brightlayer applications and support a strong end-to-end cyber security to connect and support applications for remote services.

The IoT-Router documentation provides links to the router documentation to enable an easy and secure setup to the devices in the Brightlayer environment. It also provides linkes to the latest firmware releases.
